Connectivity options drive value for utilities

There is broad agreement that grid edge processing of high-resolution data is the future of AMI – and more importantly – of maintaining grid resiliency in an era of rising demand for electricity.

Edge processing enables situational awareness, load disaggregation and automated demand response in real time. But, ultimately, reliable and timely network communication with the utility head-end systems and peer-to-peer devices remains an important value proposition for AMI and grid sensors.

Landis+Gyr’s leadership in RF Mesh network technology has connected millions of meters and devices over the past two decades. But early on, the focus on best fit technologies led the company to be a leader in cellular modem integration as well. In addition to options for utilities to use private cellular for AMI network communications, Landis+Gyr’s global partnership with Vodafone IoT, which delivers omni-carrier access to best signal public carriers, has enabled flexible options for utilities to utilize best-fit networks throughout their service territories.

At Landis+Gyr’s recent Exchange user conference, Klaus Wolf, Head of Key Accounts for Vodafone IoT, emphasized the importance of cellular to the innovation process happening in the utility IoT space.

“Vodafone IoT's partnership with Landis+Gyr has simplified the smart metering process by integrating connectivity at the point of manufacture, allowing utilities to connect their devices quickly and easily,” he said. “This collaboration has enabled Landis+Gyr to manufacture a modem integration that can operate in over 180 countries, significantly simplifying logistics and deployment.”

In the future, Wolf noted that the ongoing commitment of Vodafone IoT and Landis+Gyr to advancing smart grid technologies and supporting the transition to green energy means there will further opportunities to enhance communication options for utilities.

There is a real opportunity for companies in the US to drive innovation and improve their operations by staying ahead of customer information needs, with viable network options crucial to the success of this effort.

As Landis+Gyr continues to drive edge processing innovation with its Revelo platform and ultrasonic gas metering portfolios, cellular networks will continue to be an important option for secure and timely AMI communications.
