With 19 million Landis+Gyr Ultrasonic Gas meters deployed and delivering benefits for our utility customers and energy consumers, the introduction of Landis+Gyr’s G480 ultrasonic gas meter in North America can’t be considered “new tech.” In fact, it is the only residential ultrasonic gas measurement platform proven at scale for over three decades.

Landis+Gyr has been a leader in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) since the release of our first digital electric meter in the 1980’s with a common cloud-based management platform operating across all our electric, gas, and water solutions.

By incorporating greater sustained accuracy and advanced diagnostic and safety features, Landis+Gyr’s G480 ultrasonic gas meter is smaller, lighter, and much more versatile than the centuries-old diaphragm meter it replaces.

In the North American market, which is adopting ultrasonic metering for the first time, the G480 stands apart from the competition by offering:

  1. A choice of communication network options, including omni-carrier cellular allowing for deployment models that match meter replacement cycles.
  2. Autonomous and remote shutoff capabilities, with alarms for tamper, high flow, temperature, and abnormal pressure variations that enhance safe operations.
  3. Assured high precision measurement that ensures accuracy of billing and settlement while reducing truck rolls for re-reads, move in / move out, and revenue assurance.
  4. Constant monitoring enables rapid leak detection while interval recording of volume, pressure and temperature provide data required for improved operations, energy efficiency and planning.
  5. Longer lifespan and lower total cost of ownership with a 20-year field replaceable battery that increases operational access to meter capabilities.

These features—along with many others—stem from the meter’s advanced digital design, enabling it to function as both a meter and a sensor with built-in intelligence not found in AMI-equipped diaphragm meters. Its motor-driven stem valve allows autonomous and remote operation, delivering a new level of control in responding to unsafe field conditions.

Jonathan Staab, Head of Product Management at Landis+Gyr, puts it this way: “Our ultrasonic metering platform delivers best fit communication options, unmatched measurement accuracy, and enhanced remote and autonomous shutoff capabilities for safety, and 20-year battery life. It does all this with technology that has been proven functional and effective for over 30 years in the global market.”
