When National Grid first set out to modernize its metering platform, the capabilities it envisioned simply didn’t exist in the market. The utility was looking for more than traditional Meter-to-Cash data — it wanted a technology that could sense at the grid edge, deliver real-time visibility into load and power quality, and provide the intelligence to adapt as customer and system needs evolve.

To realize that vision, National Grid turned to Landis+Gyr and the next gen Revelo® platform—the industry’s first grid-edge sensing meter, purpose-built to stream high-resolution waveform datadelivering real-time power quality insights and providing a flexible platform that evolves through software and applications.

Today, that partnership has reached an extraordinary milestone: the installation of National Grid’s one-millionth Revelo® Smart Meter using Gridstream® Connect Wi-SUN technology. With one of the largest next generation AMI deployments in North America now a third of the way complete, National Grid is demonstrating how advanced metering can empower customers, enhance reliability, and support a cleaner energy future.

“National Grid is proud to work with Landis+Gyr to deliver innovative solutions to our customers across the Northeast. Our relationship has been built on a foundation of strong collaboration, forward-thinking innovation, and agile problem solving,” said Daniel Tripp, Vice President of AMI, Customer Process and Performance at National Grid. “As we celebrate the milestone of our one millionth meter installation in New York, we look forward to enabling more than 4.5 million customers with a first-of-its-kind technology that’s transforming the way we serve our communities. A special thank you to the entire Landis+Gyr team for their continued dedication to our National Grid customers.”

At the heart of National Grid’s rollout is Revelo, a meter that does more than measure. By combining advanced grid sensing with metrology in a single device, it empowers both utilities and customers to manage energy in real time — whether integrating rooftop solar, charging an EV, or simply keeping track of household appliances.

Revelo’s intelligence comes from its edge computing platform, which can run applications that tap into continuously streaming, high-resolution waveform data. This creates a foundation for both operational improvements and entirely new customer experiences.

“National Grid was instrumental in the design and testing of the Revelo platform and have partnered in expanding the business cases for everything our edge sensing devices can do for the utility and energy consumer,” said Faisal Khan, Senior Operations Director at Landis+Gyr.

One example is National Grid’s deployment of the Sense Real-time Consumer Experience app. By leveraging Revelo’s waveform sensing, the app identifies household devices and reports real-time usage, offering customers a powerful new tool for understanding and managing their energy.

National Grid is on schedule to complete the metering deployments in New York and Massachusetts as part of its transition to next generation smart infrastructure over the next two years.
